The Darkling Thrush
Thomas Hardy
I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.
The land's sharp features seemed to be
The Century's corpse outleant,
His crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind his death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervourless as I.
At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.
So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew
And I was unaware.
I have just finished the above book for a grand total of 934 pages read this summer. It's a pretty good book, though not challenging literature. Oh darn, if my mother sees this I won't be allowed to finish the series!!!! *gasp* :-)
In the family news: Philip officially walked June 21. Finally. He was extremely pleased with himself, but he has staunchly refused to walk since then. *shrug* And guess what? My brother finally got a big haircut - he chopped the mane off! It looks pretty darn good.
Okay, what do you guys think of this verse?
Romans 1:7 - "To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Are we called to be saints? How do we become saints?

Yeah, Nathanael got a decent haircut. He looks so much better. And a big hooray for Philip finally walking, even though he refuses after the fact.
